Pantone Color Of The Year 2021: Illuminating Yellow & Ultra Gray

2020 is finally coming to an end, which I think we are all thankful for. What better than starting off this new year with a color trend reveal for 2021? The Pantone Color Institute is back with its annual task of finding the colors best suited for the next year. Which colors will be the ones to reflect the year ahead?

The Year of Hope & Strength

Well, “It’s a combination that speaks to the resilience, the optimism and hope and positivity that we need. As we reset, renew, reimagine, and reinvent,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, in a video call along with the executive director, Leatrice Eiseman.

“Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

Past Pantone Colors

At the beginning of 2020, Pantone chose the vibrant but classic blue. This blue inspired stability, consistency, and connection. In more recent years we have seen winning colors such as, Living Coral, Ultraviolet, and Greenery. It just so happens that the last time Pantone chose two colors of the year was back in 2016 with, Rose Quartz and Serenity, with a soft and calming periwinkle blue.

Past colors have sometimes been a bit more blatant in their correlation to current events. Take 2019’s energetic Living Coral, for instance, which highlighted the beauty of the ocean’s microorganisms, but also warned of its disappearance, as warming oceans due to climate change have bleached coral populations. In late 2016, following the U.S. presidential election, Pantone selected Greenery for the following year, alluding to political turmoil and calling the color a hue for restoration and renewal.

“Our goal is to engage people in a conversation around color,” said Pressman. “It has to be organic. It has to be truthful to what’s taking place.”

The “Yell” For Yellow

This year, Pantone partnered with immersive digital art space Artechouse in New York City to submerge guests into the Color of the Year through a Classic, Blue-themed interactive exhibit. They plan to do so again next year with a “unique augmented reality experience” inspired by Ultimate Gray and Illuminating yellow.

“Illuminating” is described as a “bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity.” As we approach 2021, we are feeling aspirational and hopeful that life will improve. Hopefully, the world will return to some semblance of normalcy. “We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter — this is essential to the human spirit,” the Pantone color experts write.

Two Colors, One Year

This is only the second time in the 22 years that Pantone has been choosing a color of the year that two colors have been selected. The first time was in 2015, when Rose Quartz and Serenity were chosen (which is to say, pink and blue for 2016). That year, the two shades were meant to blend into each other, reflecting the recognition of gender fluidity and social progress. But this year, the two shades are meant to stand on their own, as complementary tones, supporting each other.

It is also the first time that a gray has earned the honor, and only the second time for a yellow. Earlier this year, both shades were added to the Pantone color wheel.

Still, between the internet and the Pantone teams in almost 30 countries, the direction things were going was fairly certain by midsummer.

Behind The Gray Palette

The prognosticators began by acknowledging the shades of gray in which we have all been immersed. Indeed, of all the grays in the palette, Ultimate Gray is a determinedly neutral kind of gray. It is not the dark gray of gathering storm clouds or the dour gray of institutional sameness or the dim gray of skulking in the shadows or the soft, luxurious dove gray of Dior, but a more solid, granite-like gray. The kind of gray of wisdom (gray beards!) and intelligence (gray matter!) and construction.

“It’s a dependable gray,” Ms. Eiseman said

Pantone’s Color Of The Year

Every year for the past 20 years, Pantone has released their official Color of the Year. Their choices have had an influence on everything from product development to purchasing decisions in multiple industries. They influence industries like fashion, graphic design, home goods, product packaging and industrial design.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to selecting the Color of the Year. Pantone goes through a selection process that requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To find the top choices, color experts at Pantone Color Institute explore global trends and events for new color influences. Some of these influences can include lifestyles, playstyles, socio-economic conditions, new technology, social media, and events that capture worldwide attention.
